How to stop window cleaning customers paying late

Practical ways to cut late payments on your window cleaning round — from clear terms and same-day invoices to Direct Debit and polite reminders.

Why customers pay late

Most late payers aren't trying to avoid paying. They weren't home, didn't know the clean had been done, couldn't find your bank details, or simply forgot. Fix those and most of the problem goes away.

Set clear terms from day one

Tell every new customer how and when you expect to be paid — for example, within 7 days of the clean. Put it in writing, on your website or in a welcome message, so there's no confusion later.

Invoice the same day

The longer the gap between the clean and the bill, the less urgent it feels. Sending the invoice on the day you clean, by email or text, reminds the customer the work has been done while it's fresh.

Make paying effortless

Every extra step is a reason to put it off. Offer the easy options:

  • Direct Debit, so regular customers pay automatically after each clean.
  • Card payment from a link in the invoice.
  • Bank details printed clearly on every invoice for people who prefer a transfer.

Chase politely and consistently

A friendly reminder a few days after the due date catches most forgotten payments. Keep it short and assume it's an oversight: "Just a reminder that your window clean on Tuesday is still showing as unpaid."

The key is doing it every time. Customers learn quickly which cleaners chase and which don't.

Know when to stop cleaning

If someone is two or three cleans behind, pause their cleans until they're up to date. Carrying on just grows the debt. Most customers settle up quickly once the cleans stop.
