Group customers by area

A round is simply a group of customers you clean together, usually because they're close to each other. Grouping by postcode or village keeps travel down and makes each day predictable.

Aim for rounds you can finish in a day, or a set number of days, so the whole round comes due at the same time.

Choose a cleaning frequency

Most residential customers are cleaned every four or eight weeks. Keeping a whole round on the same frequency is far easier to manage than a mix โ€” you clean the round, and in four weeks it's due again.

If a few customers want a different frequency, consider a separate round for them rather than breaking up your main one.

Put each day in a sensible order

Plan the order you clean the houses so you're not doubling back. Start at one end of the area and work through it. Once you've found an order that works, keep it โ€” it gets quicker every time.

Know how many customers fit

Every round has a limit: the number of houses you can clean in the days you've set aside. Know roughly what that limit is, so you can tell when it's time to start a new round rather than squeezing in more and running late.

Plan for rain days

Bad weather, locked gates and customers who aren't in will always move some cleans. The trick is moving that one visit without knocking the customer's regular cycle out of step โ€” otherwise your round slowly drifts apart.

Keep a note of why a clean was moved, so you can spot customers who are regularly a problem.

Ditch the paper round book

A paper book works until it gets wet, lost, or you can't remember who you skipped. Keeping your rounds on your phone means you always know who's due, who's been done and who still needs doing.
